Student privacy and personal information

Sherri, one of the TSL workshop participants, wrote:

I think student privacy and personal information should be closely guarded by the instructor as well as students; I think guidelines for submission of private info should be distributed to students (maybe like, “what’s said here stays here,” or “think twice before saying anything you wouldn’t want to see printed in tomorrow’s newspaper”).I think it’s too easy to say something on a keyboard that you wouldn’t say F2F, and sometimes text loses context and might be misinterpreted.

Failure to protect this info could become a legal issue as well as an ethical one.

Privacy concerns are very real, and as you point out, potential legal disasters. I think that if we get students to be aware of this issue, then we have provided an important life lesson.
