Electronic curb cuts

Some of the unexpected outcomes of providing accommodation for people with disabilities result in very popular new product features and designs. Here are just a few examples

  • curb-cuts – the slope on the sidewalk at the corner, initially provide for easier access for wheelchairs, are appreciated by everyone using sidewalks
  • building wheelchair access – electric door openers, sloping ramps, alternatives to stairs
  • power buttons on computers – originally relocated for people with limited sight or hand movement are now where you can easily find them and marked with the international symbol – partial circle around a vertical line
  • big buttons on phones – now a fashion item

Are there other examples of accommodations that you appreciate?
