1. introductions – summary

Great start to CIS 2 – Computers and the Internet – Summer 2016!

It is so nice to meet everyone. Lots of interesting stories. Lots of enthusiasm. Many different backgrounds and goals.

Everyone seems to be getting acquainted with the course format. We use pretty much the same types of activities for each of the topics covered in the course. There are plenty of other opportunities to explore your personal interests and learn more about the breadth and depth of the internet.

There is a lot of interest in the health and well-being of society in the future. What will life be like for kids? Will people be able to live “healthy” lifestyles? That will depend on us!

Next up – 2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

These are key concepts when it is easy for anyone to publish and access information on the internet. As several of you pointed out – too much information is a big problem.

We need to think carefully about our personal privacy as well. From your name search in 1. Introductions, no one had any big surprises – this is good. There isn’t information about you on the internet that you wouldn’t want publicly available. We will look at ways to keep your private information, private.

The good news is that people are working on this already. There are many more people who are working for the good of society as a whole. These people act responsibly and want to share their knowledge with everyone. This can have significant global benefits.
