These events are great fun. They have some serious science and engineering components. The "snow" was explained as being sodium acrylate synthetic polymer – same stuff in disposable diapers. Most of the kids were pre-school. At what age does there start to be a connection between the activity and the science and engineering behind the activity? How is this structured in the activity?

In the disposable diaper snow activity, the explainer volunteered the information in part of his 2-3 sentence information about the activity and what kids should do. There was no explanation for the heater in the water bottle ornament activity. Do curious kids just ask? Are there differences between boys’ and girls’ interest in how does it work? What does curiosity look like?
