So now we have Kindles for every kids in k-2, let’s get get using them for more than just “consuming” – drill and practice. Drill and practice is actually good because with technology it can be personalized. Kids can advance at their own pace with support from the technology and the teacher as appropriate.
The real power of technology is in doing things that are not possible without it. Collaboration, creating, choice are all very powerful and noble goals for learning with technology. That’s the “what” so what’s the “how”?
The suggestions in this article provide a nice overview of ways that any teacher can start or add to technology integration. Just pick one and do it!
SAMR – a progression of levels integration recognizes that technology “integration” can be little more than just doing the same thing in the same way with little or no actual benefit from the technology. On the other end of the model, teaching and learning are happening in ways that are not possible without technology.
The SAMR progression is very supportive of the process of integrating technology. It is ok to start with baby steps. Yes, there are some wild and crazy things that are possible with technology and the kids are going to love this stuff. But, getting there from here? Looking through the SAMR descriptions, there are lots of ways to deconstruct “there” and find ways to add in some of the intermediate steps. Or, in some cases, technology provides some basic functionality to eliminate a manual process that is still a requirement that isn’t going away anytime soon. That’s the point. SAMR isn’t saying that everything has to get to R. Understand the possibilities. If it makes sense for you and your learners, SAMR provides a guide to step it up.

So now we have iPads and Kindles for every kids in the school, we are ready to rock our learning. The SAMR model is a useful way to guide the use and integration of technology in general, and will be helpful for this bigger step into this world of 1-to-1 devices.
K-2 just got their Kindle Fire 7 tablets and the teachers are working out the daily procedures for distributing and collecting the tablets. The carts are set up with slot numbers to match the devices. The plugs are still a problem. They aren’t very robust and they are directional, adding to the general hassle of charging and storage process.
The school uses IXL and Prodigy so it was relatively easy to get going with these once the individual accounts were set up for personal independent work. Not a big change from previous years when kids were set up to work individually on the 4 classroom computer workstations or in the whole class computer labs.
Several apps were added as an initial set to each Kindle before they were distributed. This is a start. To install and use apps on the Kindles is currently a hassle as there isn’t a good class device management setup in place. Some content is available online as well as via an app. This gets around the app install problem, but the on-screen experience isn’t as good.T his is a work in progress.
Some teachers are adding apps to individual Kindles that are appropriate to each child. This is great for those who are comfortable doing this.
It is somewhat ironic that many kids have their own smartphones but those are not permitted in school.
